Dear Joe,

Sorry if it took some time for us to make a decision on this one. "Red Pistachios" was an interesting story that had us roped in but we felt the execution needed to be tighter... I think what you have is a cross between a Hemingway story and a Jim Thompson story, and I like that cross, but this reads as though it was ratfucked by academia. Not to a significant degree, but a more painful one, because I think what you have here is close to being damned good but for now is just damned.

If you can free this thing of its shackles I would love to read it again...
